Philly Beer Week: Unexpected Samples of Rodenbach Classic and Grand Cru

Following Voodoo at Doobie’s, I headed out for some darts.

Rodenbach Samples

I do not have any memorable impressions of Rodenbach Classic (5.2% ABV), other than wondering what it was called.

Rodenbach Grand Cru (6% ABV) is an enjoyable sour for someone (like me) who doesn’t generally like sour ales.  I think that sours are the next step in developing my beer palate. Years ago, I did not have any interest in IPAs, but eventually came to respect and enjoy the strength of the hops.  Rodenbach’s Grand Cru is a slow drink, a sip so full of pungent punch that it commands attention.  It’s almost as if it was developed for those independent Belgian days in the Oude Markt of drinking alone, not social drinking.  You have to pay attention to the beer and no one/nothing else.
