Ever since last year, I have been looking for Voodoo’s Cowbell Imperial Oatmeal Milk Stout (8.5% abv). It popped up in distant parts of the city, but I never got around to manning up to the bus ride and walk for a pint. However, upon realizing that I could not in fact make their Tuesday appearance at Devil’s Den (read: darts are a priority), I took a walk to Doobie’s. I’d never been to this bar, but really really really wanted some Voodoo Cowbell. I didn’t know what to expect, but.. let’s just say I’m glad I no longer have my ex’s phone number in my phone. The pet-friendly and dive-y yet home-y atmosphere sent me way back to 2009. I loved how the patrons knew each other, but didn’t seem to socialize outside of the bar. They were just happy to see each other in this space, to know, to have something familiar. So, essentially, I behaved and ordered the nitro-powered Voodoo Cowbell. The first sip made me close my eyes, but eventually it seemed a little sweet and flat. But really, how could it have lived up to last year? I’ve had a year to glamorize it in my memory.
The taste is the best part, but an awesome part of ordering a Cowbell is the sound:
In the interest of trying something new, I moved onto the Wynona’s Big Brown Ale (7.2% ABV). This was hoppier than I expected for a brown ale. I usually think sweet malt with brown ales. These are very similar photos, but notice the thinner head:
I eventually found an opportune moment to say hi to the two brewers. I’m so impressed and fascinated by the fact that this brewery is run by two men out of a garage. It makes much more sense of the rarity of the beer. The head guy (Matt?) was incredibly friendly and chatty. A pleasant Beer Week experience.
